TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) has approved for Shanghai's city officials to visit Taipei from Feb. 18 to 20 as the 2023 Taiwan Lantern Festival draws close.
This is the first time that Chinese officials have been allowed to visit Taiwan since the pandemic began. Before their arrival, China pledged not to make any political statements.
Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an has been carefully overseeing the Festival for the past three days. However, it is still unclear whether he will meet with the visiting Chinese officials during their stay.
The MAC has organized a schedule for the delegation, which includes visits to the Taiwan Lantern Festival, Taipei City Hall, and other sites of interest.
However, Taipei City Councilor Chin Hui-Chu of the Kuomintang party disclosed that the Chinese officials can only visit previously approved places and are not permitted to "sneak off for midnight snacks."
