TAIPEI (TVBS News) — All major political parties are expected to compete in the 2024 presidential race, with the selection of a vice presidential candidate playing a crucial role in determining election outcomes.

As Lai Ching-te emerges as the top pick for the Democratic Progressive Party's presidential nomination, speculation is growing that Hsiao Bi-khim, the current representative to the United States, will be named as his running mate.

"Some of Lai Ching-te's past statements may have caused concern for the United States, leading many sources to view Hsiao Bi-khim as a complementary running mate," said former legislator Tsai Pr-ru.

Ko Wen-je of the Taiwan People's Party has outlined three criteria for the ideal vice presidential candidate.

The party is seeking a female candidate, preferably from central or southern Taiwan, with a background in business or finance seen as an advantage.

"It is widely recognized that Ko Wen-je has a background in medicine and strong logical abilities, but his communication style can sometimes be rapid and direct," said Lai Hsiang-wei, a professor of the Department of Radio and Television at the National Taiwan University of Arts.

"If Ko is looking to boost his chances of winning the election, a running mate with a milder personality, who can assist in communication, may be seen as a balanced choice by the public," he added.

Lai continued: "For Hou Yu-ih, should he decide to run for the presidency, he may consider choosing a younger female candidate with international experience, complementing his background as a former police officer with local roots."

Ultimately, as outlined in the constitution, the candidate's suitability as a potential deputy head of state should be considered, a factor that has been overlooked in the past.
With the 2024 Presidential election approaching, the official candidate nominations by the three major political parties have yet to be disclosed.

Nonetheless, the identity of the candidates has already become a major subject of discussion in Taiwanese political circles.
