TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Opposition party members in Taiwan have expressed their disapproval and concerns over the ruling party's plan to provide a NT$6,000 tax rebate to Taiwanese citizens.
The Taiwan People's Party (TPP) questioned the use of the remaining NT$200 billion tax surplus, pointing to the vague description listed in the official document.
Aside from providing monetary assistance to Taiwan's labor insurance system and power plants, the government is also entitled to use the tax surplus on "any endeavors which could boost the economy."
Meanwhile, the New Power Party (NPP) questioned what would happen once the taxpayers have spent their NT$6,000. They argue that the country's economic situation would likely remain the same, pointing out that to truly help those in need, the money should be spent on critical industries and individuals.
At present, the Taiwanese government is planning on releasing the NT$6,000 tax rebate after the Chinese New Year, meaning that those planning to use the extra cash for the holidays will be in for a long wait.
