TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of Education recently announced this year's registration rate for colleges and universities. For 19 schools, the registration rate did not hit 60%, setting a record low for the past couple of years.
According to the Ministry of Education, the registration rate for National Taiwan University was 99.9% this year, compared to 100% in previous years.
Nine schools had a registration rate of 100%, 7 public universities, including National Cheng Kung University, Tsinghua University, Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, and two private schools with a 100% registration rate — the Chong De School and Weixin Shengjiao College.
This year, 19 private schools had a registration rate of less than 60%, 7 more than the previous year.
Asked on comment on this issue, a private school union said that in addition to the declining birth rate in the country, the epidemic also affected the registration rates. Fewer international students were also able to apply for admission.
Not just undergraduate programs, master's and doctoral programs throughout the country also saw lower application rates.
National Taiwan University has responded to the phenomenon by saying that the main reason for the lower registration is that the students' scores did not meet the admission standards.
While Yangming Jiaotong University admitted that only more popular fields attract more candidates.
