TAIPEI (TVBS News) — As the U.S. midterm elections come to a conclusion, the nation once again sees a deep divide between the two major political parties: the Democrats and the Republicans. With many questioning whether there is an alternative that could unify the country, Andrew Yang provides a possible solution.
TVBS commentator Wenchi Yu sat down with the current co-chair of a new third party – the Forward Party, to talk about the importance of a divergence from the bipartisan system, the party's goals, and Yang's vision for the future of America.
According to Yang, 50% of Americans regard themselves as independent, 62% said they want a third party. As the political divide becomes even more apparent, Yang believes the system should be "modernized and upgraded to a more representative dynamic multi-party system."
With aims to solve the issue from a structural level, the former Democratic party member remarks that the Forward Party isn't just hoping to "win an election."
"Our goal is to make it so that our elections actually elevate the right type of leader who wants to pass reasonable policies based on data and results," he said.
Yang added that following the midterm elections, it became clear that "dodging a bullet is not a strategy.”He also expressed hope to create a "values-based platform" where candidates can voice what they believe in without their beliefs being dictated from a national level.
As the son of Taiwanese immigrants, he acknowledges how important it is to make Asian-Americans' voices heard. He credits his parents and their commitment to making their children's lives easier in the states as part of a big motivation for him to accomplish more.
"The fact that they went from relatively humble beginnings in Taiwan to the U.S., inspired me to think bigger about what I could do in my lifetime, really in one generation," he continued.
With the 2024 presidential election coming up, Yang aims to create a unifying force and an alternative to the bipartisan system for U.S. voters.
