NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News) New Taipei City has earned USD62,230 (NTD2 million) from traffic violations at three different traffic lights in 45 days, thanks to new tech equipment. The same equipment will be installed at 16 more locations across the city in December with the goal of improving the safety of local residents and detecting traffic violations more quickly, according to city authorities.

Since the new system was launched in September at Banqiao Xinpu metro station, police officers have written 40 tickets a day on average. In total, 1,699 traffic violation cases were reported at the Wenhua Minsheng Road intersection. Traffic violations include not yielding to pedestrians, running red lights, crossing double yellow lines, or parking in non-parking spaces.

The new 16 locations were chosen based on where traffic violations and accidents are the most frequent. The number of traffic violation cases and accidents has decreased since the new equipment was placed, according to city officials.
