TAIPEI (TVBS NEWS) － At a recent event in Taichung, you could spot some foreigners on the campaign trail. They were two 16-year-old exchange students who joined in to experience first-hand the Taiwanese elections.
"I'm Danish, and we don't have many election advertisements in Denmark," the Danish exchange student told TVBS News. "I wanted to know how it works here since it's a very different country than Germany," the German exchange student added.
The students followed the candidate's schedule for a whole day, campaigning on the streets of Taiwan. They had a memorable, first-hand experience in a local election campaign.
Taichung City Councilor Chang Chia-an said he just took them to a public memorial service, and they didn't understand what a public memorial service is. "It was something new for them, getting a local experience, so I think this is quite meaningful to them," he explained.
He emphasized that regulations only stipulate that foreigners cannot give speeches on stage. There is no regulation against participating in campaign activities, he said.
