TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND, 國防部) strongly condemned China's latest military drills on Monday (Oct. 14), describing the actions as "irrational and provocative." The condemnation came after China initiated the "Joint Sword-2024B" (聯合利劍-2024B) drills early Monday, just four days after Taiwan celebrated its National Day.
China’s People's Liberation Army (PLA, 解放軍) announced that the drills, which involve its army, navy, air force, and rocket force, are intended as a "stern warning" to what it describes as Taiwan's "independence forces." The PLA has yet to specify the duration of the military exercises, which are taking place in the Taiwan Strait and surrounding areas.
Growing Tensions in the Taiwan Strait
According to the PLA, the drills will focus on sea-air patrols, controlling key ports, and testing joint combat capabilities. Taiwan's MND, meanwhile, says all soldiers are on high alert in response to this growing threat. In a statement, the MND reiterated that while Taiwan is prepared for war, it does not seek conflict.
The ministry also referenced President Lai Ching-te's (賴清德) recent National Day address, in which he reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. Lai emphasized the importance of cross-strait relations, calling for dialogue while standing firm on Taiwan's sovereignty.
China Coast Guard (中國海警局) has also launched patrols in waters near Taiwan, claiming these actions align with the One China principle. Taiwan, however, has repeatedly rejected China's claims of sovereignty over the island, insisting on its self-governing status.
Impact on Civil Aviation and Public Response
On Sunday, the PLA's Eastern Theater Command released a new training video prominently featuring an image of Taiwan, further escalating tensions. Despite the military maneuvers, Taiwan's major airlines — China Airlines, EVA Air, and Starlux — confirmed that their flights remain unaffected by the drills.
The MND also stressed its focus on continuously strengthening Taiwan's deterrence capabilities, ensuring a credible military force to protect national security. As tensions continue to simmer in the Taiwan Strait, Taiwan's defense ministry remains vigilant, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining peace while preparing to defend its territory if necessary, the MND said.
