TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth led a bipartisan delegation of high-profile U.S. senators to Taiwan on Wednesday (May 29), highlighting the support for Taiwan's democracy and freedom.

Bipartisan Delegation Enhances Ties

The delegation, including Sens. Dan Sullivan, Chris Coons, and Laphonza Butler, along with congressional staff totaling 16 members, aims to engage in discussions on key issues such as U.S.-Taiwan relations and security in the Taiwan Strait.

During their visit, the group will meet with President Lai Ching-te and Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim, attend a banquet hosted by Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-Lung, and visit National Security Council (NSC) Secretary-General Joseph Wu.

MOFA expressed that this visit underscores the bipartisan support in the U.S. Congress for Taiwan's democratic process and looks forward to strengthening the comprehensive partnership between Taiwan and the U.S.

A Commitment to Shared Values
Sens. Duckworth, Sullivan, and Coons have been vocal supporters of Taiwan in the U.S. Congress, advocating for pro-Taiwan legislation and announcing the donation of vaccines to Taiwan during its COVID-19 outbreak in June 2021. This gesture was a testament to their steadfast support for Taiwan.

Sen. Butler, who is visiting Taiwan for the first time, is known for her advocacy for women's empowerment and gender equality. She highlights the partnership between the U.S. and Taiwan based on shared values.

The visit by the U.S. senators not only signifies a strong support for Taiwan's democracy but also aims to foster closer cooperation in various global arenas, reinforcing the bond between the two nations.
