TAIPEI (TVBS News) — In response to China's criticism of the U.S. government for sending a delegation to Taiwan's presidential inauguration, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) stated on Wednesday (May 22) that the U.S. action is precedented and demonstrates a significant affirmation and respect for Taiwan's democracy.

This comes after the smooth inauguration of the new Taiwanese president and vice president on May 20, celebrated by allies and like-minded countries, including the U.S., through congratulatory delegations and statements.

U.S. Stance on Taiwan's Democracy

The U.S. State Department spokesperson highlighted that inaugurations are a normal, routine process in democratic countries. They warned that any attempt by China to increase pressure on Taiwan should be seen as provocative. The spokesperson also welcomed President Lai Ching-te's commitment during his inauguration speech to ensure peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and to maintain the status quo.

Taiwan's Sovereign Status

The MOFA reiterated that the Republic of China (Taiwan) is a sovereign, independent nation. It stated that any attempts to distort Taiwan's sovereign status would not alter the status quo in the Taiwan Strait. Taiwan remains committed to upholding the values of democracy and freedom and will continue to work closely with like-minded countries to maintain peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.

The ongoing support from the U.S. and the international community underscores the importance of Taiwan's role on the global stage, particularly in maintaining regional security and promoting democratic values. As tensions persist, the island's commitment to democracy and international cooperation remains a beacon for like-minded allies worldwide.
