TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Outgoing Tuvaluan Prime Minister Kausea Natano expressed confidence on Wednesday (Jan. 31) in the continued support for Tuvalu-Taiwan diplomatic relations by most new parliament members following Tuvalu's elections on Jan. 26.

Despite not retaining his position in the recent elections, Natano, who led Tuvalu since September 2019, emphasized the strong support for the Tuvalu-Taiwan tie among new and seasoned politicians alike.

"I can confidently say that a majority of them, including both novices and seasoned politicians, support the Tuvalu-Taiwan tie," Natano stated, adding, "Most senior MPs feel the same way. I believe they will continue to support the relationship with Taiwan."

Following the elections, the 16 newly-elected members of Parliament are expected to engage in complex negotiations over several days to form factions and establish the new government, which will then elect a prime minister.
