TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) stated on Tuesday (Jan. 30) that it will closely monitor developments in Tuvalu post-election, as most of the known elected officials have established frequent interactions and friendly stances with Taiwan, ensuring solid diplomatic ties.

MOFA deputy spokesman Hsiao Kuang-wei highlighted that China had already attempted to influence the election by buying off local media in Tuvalu, an action that deserves condemnation.

Tuvalu's Prime Minister, Kausea Natano, known for his pro-Taiwan stance, lost his seat in the Jan. 27 election. This development has sparked speculation in some media outlets that it might lead to a shift in the small South Pacific nation's foreign policy, potentially opening the door for a switch in diplomatic alliance with Beijing.

In response to these concerns, MOFA noted that the majority of the Tuvalu officials known to be elected have maintained good relations with the Embassy of the Republic of China and hold a friendly stance. They support upholding the amicable relations between Taiwan and Tuvalu.

MOFA urged the international community to pay close attention and jointly counter the autocratic dictatorial countries that seize opportunities to manipulate elections in democratic states.

This development is part of a broader trend where diplomatic allegiances are fought for in the Pacific region between China and Taiwan, with countries sometimes switching allegiances for economic or political support.
