Taiwan unveils stamps celebrating human rights

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Chen Chien-jen celebrated the release of human rights stamps by Chunghwa Post on Friday (Dec. 8), underscoring Taiwan's commitment to human rights progress.

Premier Chen, an avid philatelist, emphasized that human rights are universal values, and stamps serve as a potent tool to raise awareness about them. Taiwan's achievements in human rights, including the launch of its first National Human Rights Action Plan in 2022, which addresses eight critical areas, were highlighted. Taiwan has also integrated five of the nine major human rights conventions into its domestic laws.

Prominent figures, including Chen Chu, chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), and Wu Hong-mo, chairperson of Chunghwa Post, attended the event.

Speaking at the event, Chen Chu recalled a pivotal moment in 1964 when Chunghwa Post, during martial law, issued a commemorative stamp featuring Eleanor Roosevelt, introducing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to the public.

The new set of four stamps features acronyms of major human rights documents, such as UDHR and CEDAW, each with its distinctive colors and symbols. Wu expressed hope that these stamps would showcase Taiwan's human rights achievements as they circulate.
