TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Former legislator Shen Fu-hsiung shared his thoughts on the impact of Nancy Pelosi's historic visit to Taiwan in an exclusive interview with TVBS on Friday (Aug. 4).
Pelosi released a statement a day prior, reiterating her support for Taiwan's defense of its freedom. She emphasized the importance of standing in solidarity with Taiwan during a time when democracy and autocracy are in stark contrast.
Shen acknowledged the anti-China sentiment on Capitol Hill, stating that Pelosi's statement is understandable and welcomed by the people of Taiwan. However, he believes the visit's impact is mainly symbolic, increasing Taiwan's international visibility without strengthening its position.
As the presidential election approaches in January 2024, Shen believes that both the Kuomintang and the Democratic Progressive Party will view Washington's strong support of Taiwan as goodwill from the U.S. government.
He described the relationship between the U.S. and Taiwan as a parent-child relationship, highlighting the potential gap between what both sides want and what the U.S. government can provide.
