TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Kuomintang presidential candidate Hou Yu-ih will return from Japan on Wednesday afternoon (Aug. 2). Earlier today, he met with Japanese media giants NHK and The Asahi Shimbun.

During the conversations, Hou asserted he would abide by three principles if elected: upholding democratic freedoms, significant international participation, and contributing to the global community.

He plans to adopt former President Ma Ying-jeou's non-unification, non-independence, and non-aggression strategy, aiming to restore cross-strait peace during the Kuomintang's term in office.

Hou also hopes for a free trade agreement with Japan fostering closer economic ties between both nations. He was asked about navigating relations with China, Japan, and the United States and handling the "1992 Consensus" under Taiwan's constitution.

Acknowledging the tense international situation, Hou said he will strengthen defense forces, reduce conflicts with China, and facilitate Taiwan's economic development independent of political influences through real dialogues and discussions.

Despite Taiwan's unique international status as a sovereign nation, Hou plans to engage globally in various capacities, including observer roles at events such as the World Health Assembly and active participation in the International Civil Aviation Organization and INTERPOL.

He believes Taiwan can influence global politics and economy, contributing to regional order, cross-strait peace, technological innovation and digitization, sustainable and green economies, and international aid and humanitarian efforts. Hou has stated that he will regain the trust and mutual exchanges with China, aiming for a cooperative relationship rather than the current tense situation.
