TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The strength of waves along the northern and eastern coasts significantly increased on Wednesday (Aug. 2) due to the intensifying effects of Typhoon Khanun.

At 5:30 p.m., the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) may issue a land warning. Typhoon Khanun's center was located approximately 570 kilometers southeast of Taipei in the morning, moving in a north-northwest direction at 12 kilometers per hour.

As Typhoon Khanun approaches, the Greater Taipei areas and Yilan are preparing for its impact, with the typhoon likely to be near Taiwan on Thursday and Friday (August 3-4).

On Wednesday, the CWB warned of possible localized heavy rain along Keelung's northern coast and Taipei City's mountainous areas. In the evening, heavy precipitation in the southern regions' mountainous areas is possible. Due to the risk of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong wind gusts, the public is urged to exercise caution.

Long waves are expected to occur along the coastal areas of northern Taiwan, the eastern regions, Hengchun, and Matsu until the weekend. Therefore, residents and visitors are advised not to visit the seaside during this period.

According to the CWB's forecast, Typhoon Khanun is expected to stall in the southern part of the East China Sea and then make a northeast turn. During this time, the prevailing northwest winds will gradually shift to southwest winds, indicating the onset of rainfall in Taiwan's central and southern regions.

Although Typhoon Khanun is not expected to be as close to Taiwan as Typhoon Doksuri, it is still essential for the public to take necessary precautions against heavy rain and potential flooding.
