TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an faced a barrage of probing questions from councilors about the upcoming Taipei-Shanghai City Forum during his presentation of a comprehensive project report to the Taipei City Council on Monday (May 22).

Chiang's report focused on five major areas: prioritizing road safety measures centered around people, maintaining fiscal discipline and budget allocation, implementing long-term care policies, formulating population policies, and facilitating post-pandemic industrial transformation.

During his concluding remarks, Chiang addressed the Taipei-Shanghai City Forum, which sparked a rigorous interrogation from councilors. Several councilors expressed concerns about Chiang's position on the forum in light of escalating tensions in cross-strait relations and heightened Chinese aircraft activity around Taiwan.

Chiang reaffirmed the forum's significance as a platform for exchange between the two cities and emphasized the necessity of continual improvement through mutual learning. Regarding his attendance at the forum, Chiang announced that it had yet to be confirmed.

The forum has been pivotal in facilitating exchange and cross-strait relations between the two cities since 2010. This year's conference will unfold in Shanghai in the summer, and Deputy Secretary Wang Qiudong traveled to China on May 17 for in-depth discussions.

Also, Chiang committed to improving road safety through various measures, including increasing pedestrian scrambles and intensifying enforcement against vehicles that fail to yield to pedestrians.
