TAICHUNG (TVBS News) — Taichung MRT (TMRT) lines resumed operations on Thursday (May 11), 18 hours of emergency repairs after a crane boom from a construction site fell onto a track, resulting in one death and ten injuries.
The incident occurred at 12:27 p.m. a day earlier at the Feng-le Park Station near Wenxin South Road and Wenxin Road in Nantun District.
Regarding the station's security camera footage, Taichung MRT authorities claimed that the metro staff stayed alert and followed standard procedures after seeing the fallen crane boom; however, they had only 13 seconds to react to the incident.
Speaking at a press conference, TMRT officials said they will seek over NT$200 million in compensation from Highwealth Construction Co., the construction site operator, after calculating the estimated cost caused by the fatal accident.
The contractor's owner and the on-site operator's eight workers were taken back to the police station for questioning. Xingfu Construction also issued a second statement, saying that the steel cable broke and fell unexpectedly.
The victim, identified as a 52-year-old woman surnamed Lin, was an assistant professor in Provident University's Department of Law.
Her brother told local media that the family will prioritize their sister's funeral and follow the law if a judicial procedure is required.
He also expressed gratitude for the complete assistance and support from the Taichung City Government, the police, the President's Office, and the Control Yuan.
