TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The egg shortage might continue until next year, the Council of Agriculture (COA) Minister Chen Chi-chung (陳吉仲) said Tuesday (April 11).

Although Chen had previously pledged to stabilize the market by April or May, the ongoing challenges have made this promise difficult to keep.

The root cause of the shortage is a significant shortfall in domestic egg production, which has yet to meet demand. Chen stated that the situation is even direr than what the COA had previously reported.

To mitigate the shortage, the government has turned to import eggs. However, consumers have noted that cheaper imported eggs are difficult to find at supermarkets, with more expensive domestic options remaining on the shelves.

Inflation has also contributed to the egg shortage crisis. According to the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics, the price of eggs rose by 26.52% compared with last year.
