TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen will meet U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Wednesday (April 5) at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.

McCarthy's office announced the bipartisan meeting on Monday but failed short of listing the names of all the members of Congress who have already confirmed their participation.

Rep. Mike Gallagher, R-Wis., chair of the House select committee on China, who visited Taiwan in February, and Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., the minority leader of the Armed Services Committee, will join the meeting, according to Wicker's statement.

China expressed disapproval regarding Tsai's meeting with the Congressmen in the U.S.

At a press conference in Beijing, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Mao Ning, said that "relevant U.S. Congressmen should abide by the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiqué."

"Refrain from sending wrong signals to Taiwan independence forces, to not damage the China-U.S. relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait," Mao said.

The U.S. views Tsai's transit in the U.S. as common despite China's threats, said the National Security Council spokesperson, John Kirby.

"There's no reason for the Chinese to overreact… We strongly urge them not to overreact to this," Kirby said.

The historic moment will mark the first time a Taiwanese president and a U.S. House Speaker meet in the United States.
