TAIPEI (TVBS News) Taiwan will extend mandatory military service from four months to one year starting in 2024.

According to Shen Fu-hsiung, a former legislator, the announcement will have a limited impact on the 2024 Presidential Election.

"Any new plan or any revision of the current existing plan coming from the President today will please no one," said Shen. "I would say the impact would be very low, because this new idea is already anticipated in society. So, the generation of the future soldiers, as well as their parents, already anticipate this."

Shen added: "Any training, any extension of the period of service would not do the job, because the best way is for the PRC to decide not to start a war.”
