TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan is upping the ante on its military training, as President Tsai Ing-wen announced on Tuesday (Dec. 27) extending compulsory service to one full year.

Recruits can now expect a more intensive 8-week boot camp featuring general combat and firing exercises with up to 160 shots fired per trainee — nearly twice what was expected before.

Additionally, first aid for war wounds has been added in order to be better prepared should any serious conflict arise.

The extra three weeks of training will allow for drills and shooting training of 800 rounds maximum plus instruction on missile operations.

All this promotes an increased level of patriotism among Taiwan's future servicemen – something that could prove pivotal in protecting their home country's freedom and sovereignty moving forward.
