TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan condemned China's pressure on EU nations to bar its politicians Wednesday (Jan. 14). Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA, 外交部) called Beijing's tactics "despicable means" to undermine Taiwan's international space. The ministry responded to The Guardian's Tuesday report detailing how China invokes border laws to restrict Taiwan's diplomatic engagement.

The Guardian reported a day earlier that China, the People's Republic of China, invokes border laws to pressure European governments. Beijing demands these nations deny entry to Taiwanese political representatives visiting EU member states. The report highlights China's expanding efforts to isolate Taiwan diplomatically in Europe.

MOFA emphasized that visits by Taiwanese politicians to European Union countries benefit mutual relations. The ministry stated such exchanges remain unrelated to China and fall within sovereign diplomatic rights. Officials warned these Chinese tactics threaten European Union interests and damage international relations.

Taiwan highlighted China's military threats against the island that jeopardize Indo-Pacific peace and stability. The ministry accused Beijing of using coercive tactics beyond diplomatic pressure to isolate Taiwan internationally. MOFA stated China has no legal right to interfere with Taiwan-Europe bilateral exchanges.

The ministry pledged to collaborate with like-minded democratic nations to counter China's influence. Taiwan is committed to strengthening partnerships that promote democracy, freedom, and the rule of law globally. Officials emphasized the importance of deepening bilateral and multilateral exchanges, despite Beijing's efforts to obstruct them.

MOFA vowed to enhance bilateral and multilateral cooperation, promoting regional and global peace, stability, and prosperity. Taiwan seeks expanded international participation despite China's diplomatic blockade attempts across European capitals. The ministry reaffirmed Taiwan's commitment to democratic values and international engagement. ◼
