TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan faces potential storm threats while cold air grips northern regions, weather officials warned Tuesday (Jan. 13). WeatherRisk Explore Inc. (天氣風險) analyst Lin Hsiao-ju (林孝儒) reported disturbances developing south of Taiwan could strengthen into a depression. The systems may cause dangerous sea conditions near the Bashi Channel and southeastern coastal areas.
Continental cold air will keep northern and eastern Taiwan dry with temperatures ranging from 14-17 degrees Celsius (57.2-62.6°F) for lows and 20-24 degrees Celsius (68-75.2°F) for highs through Wednesday (Jan. 14). Central and southern regions will see warmer conditions with lows of 15-18 degrees Celsius (59-64.4°F) and highs of 24-28 degrees Celsius (75.2-82.4°F). The cold air mass brings mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies across the island.
An easterly to northeasterly monsoon will gradually warm Taiwan from Thursday (Jan. 15) through the weekend, according to analyst Lin. Radiation cooling will persist during mornings and evenings despite rising daytime temperatures across all regions of the island. Weekend moisture increases will trigger cloudy conditions and occasional showers in northeastern and eastern areas, so be prepared with rain gear for outdoor activities.
Another northeasterly monsoon is expected to strengthen early next week, bringing cooler temperatures and brief showers to northern and eastern Taiwan. Lin urged residents to monitor forecasts for potential cold snaps, as the weather pattern is shifting rapidly. The central and southern regions are expected to maintain stable conditions with sunny to partly cloudy skies throughout the weekend.
