TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A cold front swept across Taiwan Wednesday (Dec. 3), dropping temperatures to 14 to 16 degrees Celsius (57.2 to 60.8°F) in central, northern, and northeastern regions. The Central Weather Administration (中央氣象署), Taiwan's national weather agency, reported slightly warmer lows around 18 degrees Celsius (64.4°F) in Hualien (花蓮) and Taitung (臺東). Strong winds accompanied the temperature drop, affecting residents across the island.
The northeast monsoon will persist through Friday (Dec. 5), bringing rain to Keelung (基隆), Greater Taipei (大臺北), and Yilan (宜蘭) on the northern coast. The administration warned of potential heavy rain in these areas. A land wind advisory remains in effect until Thursday (Dec. 4) evening, with strong winds reaching 6 to 8 on the Beaufort scale (39 to 61 km/h).
Dr. Lin Te-en (林得恩), an atmospheric scientist, noted on his Facebook page that temperatures could drop further by 2 degrees Celsius (3.6°F) in coastal and open areas overnight. The administration mentioned a slight chance of scattered snowfall on mountains above 3,500 meters (11,483 feet) in northern and central Taiwan. Mid-level moisture is expected to decrease by nightfall.
High temperatures in northern Taiwan hover around 19 to 21 degrees Celsius (66.2 to 69.8°F), creating a chilly feel throughout the day. Central and eastern regions experience highs of 22 to 24 degrees Celsius (71.6 to 75.2°F), while southern Taiwan enjoys warmer temperatures around 27 degrees Celsius (80.6°F).
