TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan will launch a large-scale carbon storage pilot project in 2026, targeting carbon injection by 2029. Chen Chung-hsien (陳崇憲), deputy director of the Energy Administration, Ministry of Economic Affairs (經濟部能源署), announced the initiative Monday (Nov. 17) as part of Taiwan's net-zero emissions strategy.
Taiwan and the British Standards Institution (英國標準協會) developed the world's first international carbon capture standard, PAS 247, since 2023. They released the standard Oct. 30, with Chen discussing Taiwan's net-zero policy at the PAS 247 International Release Conference Monday.
Chen noted 50 carbon storage facilities operate worldwide since 1996, emphasizing saline aquifer storage (鹽水層儲存) potential. He cited challenges in technology, economic efficiency, and regulatory frameworks while highlighting President Lai Ching-te's (賴清德) 20-27% CCUS target by 2050.
Taiwan Power Company and CPC Corporation launched separate carbon capture projects in 2023, storing significant amounts annually. Chen stated Taiwan will initiate nearshore demonstration projects to gather data and establish public consensus. Taiwan plans to verify storage stability due to frequent earthquakes with National Science and Technology Council support. ◼
