TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Over 80% of Taiwanese respondents urge the government to actively promote electric scooter policies, according to a 2025 survey released Monday (Oct. 20) by the Smart Mobility Association Taiwan (SMAT, 台灣智慧移動產業協會). Focus Survey Research (山水民意研究股份有限公司) conducted the study from Aug. 18 to 25, gathering 1,080 valid samples.
The survey found 87% of respondents rely on private transportation, with 75.7% primarily using scooters. 80.8% believe promoting electric scooters will aid achieving net-zero emissions and improving air quality. SMAT identified price and government subsidies as the primary and secondary factors influencing purchase decisions.
50.6% of respondents feel the central government is not aggressive enough in promoting vehicle electrification, while 48.9% cite insufficient local government efforts. Regarding subsidy policies, 91.9% prefer consumers to receive subsidies rather than manufacturers, with 38.3% of fuel scooter riders indicating subsidies could increase their willingness to switch to electric scooters.
SMAT highlighted that 82.2% of respondents hope the Ministry of Environment will reinstate subsidies for new electric scooter purchases to encourage first-time buyers. 59% want the government to provide battery tariff subsidies, while 70.1% support implementing a "green deduction" system, allowing vehicle purchase expenses as special deductions in personal comprehensive income tax.
