TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Johnny Chiang (江啟臣), vice president of Taiwan's parliament (Legislative Yuan), arrived in Detroit Monday (Nov. 17) for a delegation visit to the U.S. and Paraguay. The Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce of North America (TCCNA, 北美洲台灣商會聯合總會) hosted a welcoming banquet highlighting Taiwanese businesses' role in North American diplomatic exchanges.
Chiang emphasized North American Taiwanese businesses serve as Taiwan's strongest partners in promoting U.S. and Canada diplomacy. He highlighted the U.S. as Taiwan's largest trading partner with bilateral trade totaling US$166 billion (around NT$5.17 trillion) from January to May. Chiang also noted thriving Taiwan-Canada economic relations under the Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement.
The Detroit banquet attracted over 500 Taiwanese expatriates from the U.S. and Canada. Prominent attendees included event chairperson Eugenia Henry (白越珠), Overseas Community Affairs Council , Taiwan's diaspora affairs ministry, Minister Hsu Chia-ching (徐佳青), and U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan.
Chiang introduced the bipartisan legislative delegation and conveyed greetings from Legislative Yuan President Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜). He expressed hope for deeper Taiwan-U.S. cooperation on security issues, highlighting Taiwanese businesses as Taiwan's global bridge. The Legislative Yuan , Taiwan's parliament, pledged strong bipartisan support for overseas Taiwanese businesses and communities. ◼
