TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Meteorologists issued a warning for northern Taiwan on Tuesday (Oct. 21) as the northeast monsoon and a low-pressure system bring intermittent rain. Areas north of Hsinchu and Yilan face potential heavy rain, with localized downpours expected along the Keelung north coast, eastern New Taipei City, and the Greater Taipei mountain region.
The TyTech Taiwan｜Weather Express (台灣颱風論壇｜天氣特急) Facebook page observed a tropical disturbance (97W) off Taiwan's east coast, which could also impact the weather. The disturbance will move southwest over the next two days, crossing the Bashi Channel. Although the likelihood of it developing into a typhoon remains low, its proximity to Taiwan could amplify the effects of the existing weather systems.
The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) predicts high rainfall probabilities for northern and eastern Taiwan on Wednesday and Thursday. Keelung's north coast, Yilan, and north Hsinchu could experience significant rainfall, with heavy downpours expected in Yilan. Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taitung, and the central and southern mountain areas may also see brief showers, while other regions remain mostly cloudy.
Rain is expected to ease on Saturday, but Keelung's north coast, the northeast, and northern and eastern mountain areas will continue to see rainfall. By Sunday, the northeast monsoon will strengthen, increasing the likelihood of rain on windward slopes, affecting Keelung's north coast, the northeast, and Greater Taipei's mountain region, with sporadic showers in northern, eastern, and southern Taiwan.
