TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) emphasized bolstering Taiwan's defense capabilities during the Overseas Community Affairs Council Meeting opening ceremony Monday (Oct. 20). Lai stated the government actively strengthens defense forces because "peace cannot be achieved through wishful thinking." The remarks signal Taiwan's commitment to military preparedness amid regional security challenges.
Speaking at this ceremony, Lai criticized former President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) for reducing the defense budget during his administration, which failed to deter China's military expansion. Under President Tsai Ying-wen (蔡英文), Taiwan increased defense spending from 1.8% to 2.5% of GDP, with plans to reach 3.32% next year.
The government aims to increase the defense budget to 5% of GDP by 2030. Lai argued the defense budget proves vital not only for military procurement but also for promoting defense autonomy and economic development. He highlighted Taiwan's potential in foundational industries, including semiconductors and information and communication technology, to collaborate internationally in developing the defense industry.
Lai emphasized the importance of Taiwan securing a position within the defense industry's supply chain to ensure national security and stimulate economic growth. As Taiwan continues increasing its defense budget, the country seeks to balance security needs and economic advancement. ◼
