TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA, 外交部) responded Tuesday (Sept. 30) to reports that Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) plans pressuring U.S. President Donald Trump to oppose Taiwan independence. MOFA spokesperson Hsiao Kuang-wei (蕭光偉) emphasized the U.S. maintains its Taiwan stance, stating the Republic of China (ROC, 中華民國), Taiwan, and People's Republic of China (PRC, 中華人民共和國) exist independently and equally. The Wall Street Journal reported the Chinese diplomatic pressure campaign Saturday (Sept. 27).
Hsiao declared China's actions pose the greatest threat to Taiwan Strait peace while highlighting Taiwan's commitment to preserving regional stability. U.S. State Department officials reiterated Monday (Sept. 29) to Central News Agency (CNA, 中央社), Taiwan's official news agency, that American Taiwan policy remains unchanged. The U.S. position adheres to the One China policy, Taiwan Relations Act, three U.S.-China Joint Communiques, and Six Assurances to Taiwan.
Hsiao emphasized Taiwan's role as a responsible international community member collaborating with like-minded countries to ensure regional peace and prosperity. Recent U.N. General Assembly joint statements involving foreign ministers from the U.S., Japan, South Korea, and G7 nations reaffirmed Taiwan Strait peace importance. International partners oppose attempts to change the status quo through force or coercion, demonstrating global support for Taiwan's position. ◼
