TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Fubon Guardians captain Lin Che-hsuan (林哲瑄) announced his retirement Monday (Sept. 15), ending an illustrious career that spanned Major League Baseball and Taiwan's professional leagues. The 37-year-old outfielder, who served as the Guardians' captain for six seasons, played a pivotal role for both his club and Taiwan's national team throughout his career. His departure marks the end of an era for one of Taiwan's most accomplished international baseball players.
Lin revealed he decided to retire at season's end, concluding an impressive 11-year career in the Chinese Professional Baseball League, Taiwan's top professional baseball league, (CPBL) as he approaches his 37th birthday. The veteran player traveled to Driveline Baseball in the United States before the season, hoping to extend his career by another year through advanced training methods. Back injuries in April forced him through grueling rehabilitation, ultimately leading to his retirement decision in July following heartfelt discussions with his wife and agency representatives.
Lin expressed profound sadness about no longer fighting alongside his beloved teammates in future battles. The veteran captain announced his retirement with remarkable composure, yet worried deeply about the emotional impact on his teammates, quietly leaving the stadium after completing his weight training session. Despite his careful efforts to maintain team morale, several younger players could not contain their tears upon learning of his departure.
Lin recounted witnessing teammate Lin Chih-Sheng's (林智勝) incredible home run in his final at-bat, prompting him to message junior player Chen Zhen (陳真), who replied that he would be devastated if Lin decided to retire. Having already made his retirement decision, Lin struggled emotionally to respond but managed to express his desire to continue fighting alongside the team. He apologized for keeping his decision secret from everyone, but expressed enthusiasm about supporting his teammates in a new capacity and helping the Fubon Guardians capture their first championship. ◼
