TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's premier semiconductor exhibition opened Wednesday (Sept. 10) with industry leaders from 56 countries gathering to showcase cutting-edge technology and forge new partnerships. SEMICON Taiwan 2025, running through Friday (Sept. 12), promises to highlight breakthrough innovations under the theme "Leading with Collaboration. Innovating with the World." The three-day event positions Taiwan as the global epicenter for semiconductor advancement and international cooperation.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Taiwan's Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) declared artificial intelligence the driving force behind a new industrial revolution during Wednesday's opening ceremony. The government has committed over NT$30 billion (around US$990 million) in next year's central budget to launch Taiwan's "AI's Ten Major Constructions" (台灣AI新十大建設). The ambitious initiative will focus on developing AI-powered drones, advanced robotics, and autonomous vehicle technologies.

Taiwan's three semiconductor giants unveiled a groundbreaking collaboration at the exhibition, with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC, 台積電), United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC, 聯電), and VISiC Technology (VIS, 世界先進) jointly releasing Taiwan's first humanoid robot. The robot features an NVIDIA chip as its processing brain and demonstrates advanced capabilities including image recognition and interactive gesturing. Unlike conventional robots, this model can lift up to ten kilograms with a single hand.

Mirle Automation Corporation (Mirle, 盟立) spearheaded the sophisticated robot's comprehensive system development and advanced engineering processes. CEO Stone Lin (林世東) explained that beyond the essential core reducer and controller components, the humanoid robot incorporates highly sophisticated control software designed to guide its intelligent responses to various operational scenarios. The ambitious company aims to complete the final product design and testing phases this year and begin full-scale mass production in 2026.

Japanese equipment manufacturer Tokyo Electron (TEL) maintained a notably subdued presence at this year's exhibition, forgoing its traditional press conference and product showcase. Industry insiders speculate the low-key approach stems from the recent TSMC 2nm technology leak scandal, creating a particularly sensitive atmosphere for the company. Unconfirmed reports suggest TEL CEO Toshiki Kawai visited TSMC chairman C.C. Wei (魏哲家) in Hsinchu on Tuesday to personally apologize for the incident. ◼
