TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taipei stock market soared 314.73 points Friday (Sept. 5) to close at 24,494.58 points, with transaction value reaching NT$416.399 billion (around US$13.65 billion). Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (台積電), the world's largest contract chipmaker, powered the rally by contributing 160 points to the overall surge. The tech giant's stock price jumped NT$20 to close at NT$1,180, pushing its market value back to NT$30.6 trillion (around US$1 trillion).
TSMC's American depository receipts (ADRs) increased by 1.65%, providing additional momentum for the chipmaker's stock price surge. September Taiwan index futures settled at 24,419 points, up 289 points, with trading volume reaching 55,653 contracts. October Taiwan index futures closed at 24,412 points, rising 283 points, with 1,046 contracts traded in the derivatives market.
Semiconductor stocks dominated the rally, with WinWay Technology (穎崴), MPI Corporation (旺矽), and Chunghwa Precision Test Tech (精測) all hitting their daily trading limits. Accton (智邦) and Fositek (富世達) surpassed the NT$1,000 milestone, closing at NT$1,020 (around US$33.44) and NT$1,040 (around US$34.10), respectively. The memory technology sector benefited from recovering market demand and rising product prices, with Nanya Technology (南亞科), Winbond (華邦電), and Elite Semiconductor Microelectronics Technology (晶豪科) also reaching their daily limits.
The electronics stock index surged over 1.78%, serving as the primary catalyst for the market's upward momentum. Traditional industry stocks faced significant declines, with the cable stock index plummeting over 2% and plastic and construction indices falling over 1%. This stark contrast between sectors highlighted the shifting dynamics within Taiwan's stock market landscape, emphasizing technology's dominant influence. ◼ (At time of reporting, US$1 equals approximately NT$30.5)
