TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) joined Legislative Yuan, Taiwan's parliament, Deputy Speaker Chiang Chi-chen (江啟臣) Friday (Aug. 22) to campaign against recall efforts in Taichung City's Fengyuan District (豐原區). The politicians urged citizens to vote against the recall Saturday (Aug. 23), emphasizing its potential impact on Taiwan's democratic trajectory. Their appearance comes as the second wave of recall votes targeting opposition legislators approaches across Taiwan.

Chiang Wan-an arrived early Friday (Aug. 22) to meet Chiang Chi-chen at his service office in Fengyuan District. The politicians helped each other apply sunscreen before their street tour, with Chiang Chi-chen gifting Chiang Wan-an two bottles of locally famous chili sauce from Taichung City. Chiang Chi-chen expressed to media the deep bond he shares with Chiang Wan-an, while the Taipei mayor called for residents to vote against the recall and safeguard Taichung City's future.

The recall campaign, led by the "Recall Against Chiang" (一罷擊臣) team, organized a pre-election motorcade rally through multiple districts. The motorcycle convoy circled through Fengyuan District, Dongshi District (東勢區), Shigang District (石岡區), Xinshe District (新社區), and Heping District, calling on citizens to vote Saturday (Aug. 23). Liao Chih-yen (廖芝晏), a recall campaign leader, described the effort as a civic action achieved through dedicated volunteer efforts within the electoral district.

The initial wave of recall votes against opposition legislators failed Saturday (July 26). Saturday's round (Aug. 23) will decide the fate of seven Kuomintang (國民黨), Taiwan's main opposition party, legislators, including Ma Wen-chun (馬文君), Yu Hao (游顥), Lo Ming-tsai (羅明才), Chiang Chi-chen, Yang Chiung-ying (楊瓊瓔), Yen Kuan-heng (顏寬恒), and Lin Szu-ming (林思銘). Voters will simultaneously decide whether to reopen the Maanshan Nuclear Power Plant (馬鞍山核能發電廠). ◼
