TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Legislative Yuan President Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜), Taiwan's parliament speaker, on Friday (Aug. 22) urged voters to reject the recall of seven Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) legislators and support the nuclear plant referendum. Han's appeal comes as Taiwan faces political tensions over legislative representation and energy policy. The parliamentary leader's intervention highlights the stakes surrounding these crucial democratic processes.
Han and the KMT legislators stressed the unfairness of the recall efforts during the press conference and encouraged voters to demonstrate wisdom and courage. Han highlighted the challenge to democracy posed by recalls targeting Taichung City legislator Chiang Chi-chen (江啟臣) and six other KMT legislators. The targeted lawmakers include Yang Chiung-ying (楊瓊瓔), Yen Kuan-heng (顏寬恒), Ma Wen-chun (馬文君), Yu Hao (游顥), Lin Szu-ming (林思銘), and Lo Ming-tsai (羅明才).
Han criticized the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨), Taiwan's ruling party, for using national resources to pursue these recalls. He warned that Taiwan's parliament will be left with only one party and one voice if this continues. Han expressed concern over the potential loss of checks and balances, and called on voters to support the referendum for clean, sustainable, and affordable energy. ◼
