TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Yunneng Wind Power Company (允能風力發電股份有限公司) announced Thursday (Aug. 21) that the Yunlin Offshore Wind Farm (雲林離岸風場) has commenced full commercial operations, marking a pivotal moment in Taiwan's renewable energy transformation. The massive installation in the Taiwan Strait features 80 turbines with a combined capacity of 640 megawatts now fully integrated into Taiwan's power grid. This achievement represents a significant milestone in the island's ambitious transition toward sustainable energy independence and carbon reduction goals.

The wind farm will supply clean energy to over 600,000 Taiwanese households annually, generating an impressive 2.4 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity. This substantial renewable energy output will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 1.2 million metric tons each year, contributing significantly to Taiwan's environmental goals. Yunneng, a multinational joint venture involving Skyborn Renewables (天豐新能源), TotalEnergies Group (道達爾能源集團), EGCO, and Sojitz Corporation (双日株式會社), successfully spearheaded this transformative renewable energy project.

Skyborn Renewables led the comprehensive development and construction of the Yunlin Offshore Wind Farm, achieving full turbine grid connection in January. TotalEnergies Group now manages the complex technical operations, while Skyborn Renewables continues overseeing diverse commercial management services to ensure optimal operational quality. The farm's strategic location spans 8 to 17 kilometers (5.0 to 10.6 miles) off Taiwan's western coast, covering 82 square kilometers with water depths from 7 to 35 meters (23 to 115 feet).

The generated electricity feeds into Taiwan's power grid through two onshore substations strategically located in Taixi Township (台西鄉) and Sihu Township (四湖鄉) in Yunlin County. Yunneng's Chairman Ku Hsien-hsuan (顧賢鉉) noted that the wind farm secured crucial grid connection capacity in 2018, establishing a new benchmark for collaboration with local industries and innovative project financing structures. The wind farm operates under two comprehensive 20-year power purchase agreements, ensuring long-term electricity supply to the Taiwan Power Company (台灣電力公司) Taiwan's state-owned utility. ◼
