China hosts first World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Beijing hosted the groundbreaking 2025 World Humanoid Robot Games (世界人形機器人大賽) from Wednesday to Saturday (Aug. 14-17), marking the world's first competitive robotics athletic championship. Robot athletes representing 16 countries competed in diverse events including sprint races, soccer matches, synchronized dance performances, and martial arts demonstrations. The inaugural tournament captivated international audiences while showcasing cutting-edge humanoid technology from across the globe.

The robot Tiangong (天工) emerged as the competition's most remarkable performer during the multi-day tournament. Tiangong distinguished itself as the sole competitor capable of completing both the 1,500-meter and 400-meter racing events entirely through autonomous navigation, capturing widespread attention from spectators and technical observers. The advanced robot suffered a dramatic setback during the challenging obstacle course when it lost balance on the treacherous spiral staircase, resulting in a catastrophic head fracture and mechanical parts scattering across the arena.

 

Tournament officials swiftly cleared debris and repaired the damaged competition area before introducing the next robotic contestant. Event broadcasters praised Tiangong's remarkably stable performance throughout the initial four challenging stages of the 100-meter obstacle course before the devastating malfunction occurred on the spiral staircase section. Meanwhile, Unitree G1 (宇樹G1), another prominent mechanical athlete, demonstrated exceptional capabilities in sprint competitions but continues requiring significant improvements in navigating around smaller course obstacles.

The comprehensive three-day championship showcased revolutionary humanoid robot technology while featuring numerous interactive sports machines positioned outside the main competition arena to engage curious public spectators. Li Xianglong (李相龍), a leading researcher from the prestigious Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence (智源研究院), emphasized the formidable challenges robots encounter when attempting table tennis gameplay. The researcher detailed how the sport demands exceptional brain, hand, and eye coordination capabilities while highlighting the severely limited training data currently available for robotic development.

 
Tournament organizers emphasized that the games serve to refine existing robotic capabilities while testing decision-making systems, controllers, and motor skills for factory or household use. This inaugural global humanoid robot sports championship bridged technology and public understanding while demonstrating China's ambitious drive to advance its robotics industry. China plans to establish a CNY 1 trillion (around US$33.3 billion) investment fund to support robotics and AI start-ups in its push for world industry leadership. ◼
