TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Meteorologists are closely tracking a potential tropical system developing east of the Philippines, with significant implications for Taiwan after Aug. 10. Weather expert Chia Hsin-hsing (賈新興) predicts the system could impact Taiwan, urging residents to maintain vigilance as conditions evolve. The Facebook weather page Look Weather highlighted a 60% to 70% probability of tropical system formation in the region, based on European ensemble model data released Sunday (Aug. 3).
Taiwan will experience weakening southwest winds on Aug. 5, resulting in significantly reduced rainfall across the island nation. The Pacific high-pressure system will extend northwest by Aug. 6, stabilizing weather conditions throughout Taiwan until Aug. 10. The South China Sea and areas east of the Philippines will simultaneously transform into low-pressure zones, signaling potential tropical activity development in the region. Chia emphasized the critical need to monitor any tropical disturbance development and trajectory patterns affecting Taiwan's weather outlook.
Chia noted an increased likelihood of low-pressure systems near the South China Sea and east of the Philippines from Aug. 14 to Aug. 18, potentially approaching Taiwan. He cautioned that meteorological data remains highly variable during this period. Taiwan will primarily experience afternoon northwesterly showers this week, with the rain belt shifting toward Japan and South Korea over the next 10 days. Travelers heading to Kyushu in Japan should remain particularly alert to severe rainfall conditions. ◼
