TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Tongxiao Beach (通霄海邊) in Miaoli will host a large-scale whale kite flash event Friday (Aug. 2), adding dynamic beauty to sand sculptures lining the shore for the Miaoli Sand Sculpture Festival (苗栗沙雕藝術節). Giant kites will soar above the beach, creating a spectacular aerial display. However, rainy weather forecast for the weekend may dampen the festivities.

The festival opened in July with an innovative approach, showcasing sculptures that have withstood typhoons and heavy rains. Organizers used eco-friendly adhesive layers to protect the sculptures, ensuring they remain intact despite adverse weather conditions. This protective coating has proven effective against Taiwan's unpredictable summer storms.

Sand Sculpture Art Director Chen Kun-tien (陳坤田) explained to TVBS that Tongxiao Beach's sand is ideal for sculpture work. The sand's low clay content enhances the adhesive's protective effect, allowing artworks to survive harsh conditions. This technical innovation represents a breakthrough in outdoor sand sculpture preservation.

Kite flyer Cheng Kai-yuan (鄭凱元) noted organizers have prepared Taiwan's largest collection of whale kites specifically for the Tongxiao event. He highlighted the breathtaking spectacle created by the interplay between soaring kites and intricate sand sculptures. The whale-themed kites will create an oceanic atmosphere above the coastal artwork.

The Central Weather Bureau has forecast strengthening southwest winds from Aug. 2-4 that may bring heavy rains to areas south of Miaoli. These conditions could potentially affect the kite event's success and visitor turnout. Festival organizers are monitoring weather developments closely and may adjust scheduling if necessary.

Despite weather uncertainties, the combination of weather-resistant sand sculptures and spectacular whale kites promises visitors a unique cultural experience. The event represents Miaoli's commitment to innovative outdoor art installations that can withstand Taiwan's challenging climate conditions.
