TAIPEI (TVBS News) — YouTube launched its Premium Lite plan in Taiwan on Wednesday (July 16), offering viewers ad-free experiences on most videos for NT$119 (about US$4.06) per month. Sandy Chen (陳容歆), YouTube's deputy director of strategic partnerships for Greater China, announced in a blog post that the video streaming giant plans to roll out the service across the island nation in the coming weeks.

The Premium Lite plan specifically targets Taiwanese viewers seeking uninterrupted experiences while watching gaming, comedy, cooking, and educational content. YouTube designed the service to work seamlessly across multiple devices, including mobile phones, laptops, and television sets, allowing subscribers flexibility in how they consume content.

Despite offering ad-free viewing for most content, Chen cautioned that subscribers might still encounter advertisements when consuming music content, watching YouTube Shorts, or during search and browsing activities. She recommended the more comprehensive Premium plan, priced at NT$199 (approximately US$6.79) monthly, for users desiring completely ad-free music experiences, offline downloads capability, or background playback functionality.

Chen emphasized that the introduction of the Premium Lite plan in Taiwan serves dual purposes: providing users with less disruptive viewing experiences while simultaneously creating additional revenue streams for content creators and partners within the YouTube ecosystem. The carefully balanced approach aims to benefit both consumers and producers in Taiwan's digital content market.

YouTube initially tested its Premium Lite service in Thailand, Germany, and Australia before expanding to the United States market in March 2025. Taiwan joins a growing list of markets now offering the service, which has reached 19 countries worldwide as the company continues its global rollout strategy. ◼ (At time of reporting, US$1 equals approximately NT$29.3)
