TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Deputy Foreign Minister Chen Ming-chi (陳明祺) underscored the continuing trade negotiations between Taiwan and the United States during a press briefing on Wednesday (July 16). Chen revealed that final tariff rates have not yet been determined, as officials from both sides remain engaged in active discussions. The talks have gained heightened urgency due to the August 1 deadline imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, leaving negotiators with a narrow two-week window to reach an agreement.
The deputy minister pointed out that countries rarely know precise tariff figures before negotiations conclude, while emphasizing the genuine commitment demonstrated by both Taiwan and American representatives. Chen affirmed the Taiwanese government's dedication to safeguarding "national interests," supporting domestic industries, and maintaining public health and food security standards throughout the talks. He acknowledged that the delicate character of these discussions has necessitated compromises from both parties, though substantial advancements have been achieved on key issues.
When questioned by reporters about the prevailing optimism regarding the trade discussions, Chen carefully measured his response. The senior diplomat declined to characterize the atmosphere as optimistic. He nevertheless reassured the press that both negotiating teams are exerting considerable effort to move the complex talks forward toward a mutually beneficial conclusion. ◼
