TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taipei's Department of Information and Tourism (台北市觀傳局) announced on Tuesday (July 8) that authorities have fined illegal short-term rentals 192 times, totaling NT$13.92 million, in the first half of the year. The department urged tourists to choose legal accommodations as the summer travel season draws more visitors to Taipei.
According to the department, illegal short-term rentals pose public safety risks, including fire and sanitation hazards. Officials advised travelers to check for a "Hotel Registration Certificate" (旅館業登記證) or "Homestay Registration Certificate" (民宿登記證) upon checking in. Tourists can also visit the "Taiwan Stay" (旅宿網) website for legal accommodations.
The department invited the public to help maintain lodging quality. If tourists inadvertently stay in illegal accommodations, they can report it through Taipei's complaint system, providing booking details as evidence. To raise awareness, the department produced bilingual promotional videos and materials, which play at the Visitor Information Center (旅服中心) and on MRT platforms.
As Taipei continues to attract tourists, the department's efforts highlight the importance of choosing safe and legal accommodations. Travelers are encouraged to remain vigilant and utilize available resources to ensure a safe stay in the vibrant city.
