TAIPEI (TVBS News) — One of Taiwan's telecommunications giants is reinventing itself for the artificial intelligence era. Taiwan Mobile (台灣大哥大), the island's second-largest telecom operator, unveiled an ambitious strategic pivot Tuesday (June 24) that places AI-powered technologies at the center of its future growth plans. During a packed media event at the company's headquarters, executives detailed expansive initiatives to transform the traditional carrier into a comprehensive technology provider offering sophisticated enterprise services spanning artificial intelligence applications, advanced cybersecurity systems, and integrated cloud computing solutions. Taiwan Mobile's President Jamie Lin (林之晨) articulated the company's evolved identity, characterizing the firm as "a technology carrier with AI as its fundamental driving force."
The strategic repositioning comes on the heels of impressive financial performance. Company officials revealed that Taiwan Mobile generated consolidated revenue of NT$199.4 billion (approximately US$6.76 billion) in 2024, representing a substantial NT$66.5 billion (US$2.25 billion) growth over the preceding five-year period. Financial highlights included an earnings per share (EPS) of NT$4.57 (US$0.15), reaching its highest level in six years. The momentum has continued into 2025, with first-quarter results showing remarkable growth metrics: telecommunications operating profit surged 30% compared to the same period last year, while net profit after tax increased by 23%.
During the financial presentation, Chief Financial Officer Jacky Chang (張家麒) emphasized that Taiwan Mobile achieved unprecedented performance across key financial indicators in 2024, with both consolidated revenue and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) reaching all-time highs. The company's free cash flow demonstrated robust 20% year-over-year growth. In a separate segment addressing consumer business performance, Chief Consumer Business Officer Tony Lin (林東閔) pointed to significant improvements in customer retention metrics, with monthly subscriber churn rate falling to a record-low 0.6%. Lin attributed this achievement to the company's revamped pricing structures and expanded portfolio of digital service offerings that have enhanced customer loyalty.
Looking forward, Taiwan Mobile has established aggressive growth targets for its expanding enterprise business segment. Chief Enterprise Business Officer Shing Chu (朱曉幸) outlined projections for a 20% increase in overall enterprise service revenue during the current fiscal year, with the specialized "cloud and AI" business unit forecasted to deliver an extraordinary 223% revenue surge. To support this exponential growth in data-intensive services, the company has formed a strategic partnership with Vantage Data Centers (VDC), a global hyperscale data center provider, to develop an international AI-focused data center. Executives expect this facility to begin generating revenue contributions by the fourth quarter of 2025.
