TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan has set an ambitious target to welcome 10 million international travelers by the end of 2025, Transportation Minister Chen Shih-kai (陳世凱) declared on Tuesday (May 27). The island nation is actively working to diversify its tourism base and decrease dependence on any single market. Minister Chen highlighted a significant shift in visitor demographics, noting that American tourists now represent Taiwan's fourth-largest visitor group, accounting for 10% of all international arrivals in 2024.
The transportation official underscored Taiwan's dedication to showcasing its cultural and sporting attractions, specifically highlighting signature events such as the Taiwan Lantern Festival, a traditional celebration featuring elaborate light displays, and the Tour de France Challenge cycling competition. Minister Chen candidly addressed economic headwinds facing the tourism sector, particularly the approximately 10% strengthening of the New Taiwan dollar, which has elevated costs for international visitors. Despite these challenges, he maintained optimism that innovative cross-sector service integration initiatives led by the Tourism Administration would successfully increase tourist expenditures.
In a strategic move to distribute visitor traffic beyond major hubs, the Tourism Administration (觀光署), Taiwan's government agency overseeing tourism development, will implement financial incentives for charter flights operating to secondary airports across the island. Tourism Administration Director General Chou Yung-hui (周永暉) shared encouraging statistics during the announcement, revealing that international visitor arrivals had already reached 3.5 million by May 5, representing a substantial year-over-year increase in tourism recovery.
Tourism officials continue to emphasize experience enhancement as Taiwan expands its appeal to global travelers, developing varied attractions from urban cultural sites to pristine mountain destinations and coastal experiences. The carefully crafted combination of improved visitor services, targeted marketing campaigns, and financial incentives for travel operators will prove essential if Taiwan hopes to achieve its ambitious 10-million visitor milestone within the next seven months. ◼
