TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan will experience variable weather conditions on Wednesday (May 21), according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 氣象署), the island's national meteorological agency. While most regions will enjoy cloudy to clear skies, residents of Hualien, eastern Taiwan, and the southern Hengchun Peninsula (恆春半島) should prepare for scattered showers throughout the day. Weather officials have issued special advisories for mountain communities in Yilan and Hualien counties, where precipitation may continue until nightfall.

Heat will blanket the island with daytime temperatures reaching between 31 to 35 degrees Celsius (87.8 to 95°F) across most regions. Mountainous areas in central and southern Taiwan could see even more intense heat, with thermometers potentially climbing to 36°C (96.8°F) or higher. Health officials urge residents to apply sunscreen and maintain adequate hydration when outdoors. Overnight lows will remain warm at 25 to 28°C (77 to 82.4°F). The offshore islands of Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu will experience similar weather patterns with temperatures ranging from 25 to 31°C (77 to 87.8°F).

According to the Taiwan Air Quality Monitoring Network (環境部空氣品質預報), the government's air quality forecasting agency, conditions remain favorable for pollutant dispersion in areas south of Hsinchu and Miaoli counties thanks to steady southerly winds. Northern Taiwan may experience minor pollutant accumulation, with officials noting potential increases in afternoon ozone concentrations resulting from photochemical reactions. The monitoring system classifies air quality as "good" throughout central and southern regions, while northern territories and the offshore island of Matsu register at "moderate" levels.

Aviation authorities advise travelers to monitor flight schedules closely as visibility may be compromised in the offshore islands of Kinmen and Matsu. Meteorologists predict low-lying cloud formations and potential fog development during predawn and evening hours, conditions that could affect transportation services between these outlying territories and Taiwan's mainland. Passengers planning travel to these destinations should verify departure status with carriers before proceeding to airports. ◼
