TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan will experience predominantly clear conditions on Tuesday (May 13), with only the eastern regions and Keelung's north coast expecting scattered showers, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 氣象署). Early risers in northern and northeastern areas will feel a distinct chill, with temperatures ranging from 19 to 23 degrees Celsius (66.2 to 73.4°F).
Daytime temperatures will climb significantly, peaking between 31 to 33°C (87.8 to 91.4°F) across western Taiwan while eastern regions will see milder highs of 28 to 29°C (82.4 to 84.2°F). The offshore islands present varying conditions: Penghu will range from 23 to 28°C (73.4 to 82.4°F), Kinmen from 20 to 29°C (68 to 84.2°F), and Matsu (馬祖) from 20 to 25°C (68 to 77°F), all beneath partly cloudy skies.
A powerful northeast wind system is sweeping across the Hengchun Peninsula, with gusts potentially reaching level 8 or higher, prompting authorities to issue advisories against coastal activities. Meanwhile, the Taiwan Air Quality Monitoring Network (環境部空氣品質預報) has identified poor diffusion conditions in western leeward regions that will likely trigger elevated ozone concentrations by afternoon.
Air quality across eastern Taiwan — including Yilan, Hualien, and Taitung — maintains a "Good" rating, with northern regions assessed as "Moderate." In contrast, a broad swath of western and southern Taiwan — Hsinchu, Miaoli, Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and the offshore islands — falls under an "Unhealthy for sensitive groups" designation. Health officials advise residents in affected areas, particularly those with respiratory conditions, to limit outdoor activities. ★
