TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan High-Speed Rail (台灣高鐵) reached a record-breaking 78.25 million passengers in 2024, generating NT$53.1 billion in revenue and distributing a 3.27-month year-end bonus. Despite this success, service quality concerns are emerging as seating becomes increasingly scarce during holidays.
Since its inception in 2007, ticket prices from Taipei to Kaohsiung initially rose from NT$1,490 to NT$1,630, then reverted in 2015 due to financial reforms. As the Consumer Price Index rises, the base rate per kilometer now stands at NT$4.551, indicating room for future fare adjustments.
Thanks to its convenience, the high-speed rail has fostered a one-day living circle, yet holiday travel remains a challenge. Feng Chia University (FCU, 逢甲大學) Professor Lee Ke-tsung (李克聰) highlighted the current service level decline due to insufficient train numbers.
Lee suggested increasing train frequency to improve service quality, instead of raising prices. National Taiwan University (NTU, 台大) Advanced Public Transportation Research Center (APTR) Director Chang Shyue-koong (張學孔) emphasized that fare adjustments should consider costs, base rates, service value, and potential cross-subsidies.
Chang urged the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MTC, 交通部) to enhance investment and service integration. The high-speed rail has effectively shortened the north-south distance in Taiwan, boosting transport efficiency.
However, potential fare increases could burden commuters, especially amid inflationary pressures. While striking a balance between ticket prices and service quality remains a significant concern, consumers' traveling experiences correlate to long-term strategies for the company's sustainability.
