TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of National Defense (MND, 國防部) addressed recent media reports regarding the U.S. rejecting Taiwan's request to purchase E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft for the Air Force and MH-60R Seahawk helicopters for the Navy on Tuesday (April 29). The U.S. reportedly cited non-alignment with "asymmetric warfare" capabilities as the reason for the denial.

During a routine press conference, the Ministry stated that both the Air Force and Navy plan the procurements based on their equipment needs, with threat assessments, and will not publicly disclose details before completing the necessary project procedures. Air Force Major General Chiang Yuan-chi (江元琦) noted that the Air Force seeks equipment that enhances combat capabilities, exchanging opinions with the U.S. and utilizing communication channels to advocate for their needs.

Chiang also mentioned that the procurement plan for the HH-60W Jolly Green II remains under development and will not be disclosed until project procedures are finalized and budget approval is secured. Lieutenant General Chiu Chun-jung (邱俊榮), chief of staff of the Navy Headquarters, emphasized the Navy's anti-submarine warfare requirements, highlighting the mobility and helicopters excel at wide-area search capability.

Chiu stressed that the Navy is evaluating new anti-submarine helicopters and the performance enhancement of existing models, maintaining confidentiality until project procedures are completed. The Ministry's remarks underscore the ongoing deliberations and strategic planning involved in Taiwan's defense acquisitions.
