TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) on Wednesday (March 5) reiterated its commitment to a strategic increase in defense spending to bolster Taiwan's military capabilities. The party emphasized this measure as essential to addressing security threats in the Taiwan Strait and maintaining regional peace and stability.
Elbridge Colby, the nominee to become under secretary of defense for policy, expressed significant concern over Taiwan's Legislative Yuan's (立法院) recent defense budget cuts. He noted that this issue has become a frequent topic of private discussions among the Democratic and Republican parties in the U.S.
The opposition KMT and majority party in the legislature, underscored the importance of enhancing the military's combat effectiveness and improving the welfare of service members. The party reaffirmed its unwavering support for the Taiwan Relations Act (台灣關係法) and the military cooperation between Taiwan and the U.S. The party stated it backs any military procurement from the U.S. that aligns with Taiwan's defense interests and needs.
Recently, the KMT asserted that it has actively proposed reform bills in the Legislative Yuan to raise salaries and benefits, aiming to address the military's human resources shortage and highlight its commitment to defense spending.
